Faith & Culture

The church is full of hypocrites.

Short answer

Sometimes that is true, and it should grieve us. But Christianity never claims Christians are perfect; it claims Jesus is. The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. Jesus himself condemned religious hypocrisy more strongly than anyone.

In simple words: Nobody is perfect, not even Christians. That is why we all need Jesus, and he is the one who is perfect.

Response

Start by agreeing where the objection is true. Christians often fail to live up to what they believe, and sometimes they do serious harm. That deserves honesty and repentance, not defensiveness.

But notice that hypocrisy means falling short of a standard. The very fact that we can call Christians hypocrites shows we know what Christians are supposed to be like: the standard is good, and it comes from Jesus.

Christianity does not teach that Christians are better than other people. It teaches that everyone, including Christians, needs grace (Romans 3:23). The church is a gathering of people who know they need help.

Jesus himself reserved his strongest words for religious hypocrites (Matthew 23). If hypocrisy bothers you, you are in good company. The question is not whether Christians are perfect, but whether Jesus is who he claimed to be.
