God & Science
Doesn't evolution explain away design?
Short answer
Evolution describes how living things change over time. It doesn't explain why there is a universe, why its laws are fine-tuned for life, where the information in the first living cell came from, or why objective morality exists. Christians hold different views on how God created, but on any view, natural processes are God's tools, not his replacement.
In simple words: Science studies how living things grow and change. It can't tell us why there's a world at all, or who made it.
Response
Sincere Christians hold a range of views on how God created life: some believe in a young earth, some in an old earth with special acts of creation, and some that God used an evolutionary process. All agree on what matters most: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).
Whatever one concludes about biology, evolution cannot do the work some people expect of it.
It cannot explain the universe itself. Evolution needs a universe, with stable laws, chemistry, and planets, already in place. The beginning of the universe and the fine-tuning of its laws come before biology.
It cannot explain the origin of life. Evolution by natural selection works only on things that already reproduce. How the first self-replicating, information-rich system arose remains an unsolved problem in science.
It cannot explain morality, reason, or consciousness as more than survival tools. If our minds are only the product of blind processes aimed at survival, not truth, why should we trust them to tell us the truth, including about evolution?
Christians should be careful not to argue from gaps in our knowledge, which science may later fill. The strongest arguments for God rest on what we do know: the universe began, its laws are finely tuned, and life runs on coded information.
Key evidence
- Christians hold several views on creation; all affirm God as Creator.
- Evolution presupposes a universe with life-permitting laws already in place.
- Natural selection requires existing self-replicating life; the origin of life is unsolved.
- Strong arguments for God rest on what we know (the universe's beginning, fine-tuning, information), not on gaps.
Bible passages
- Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created.
- Psalm 104:24 "How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all."
- Romans 1:20 God's qualities seen in what he has made.
- Colossians 1:16-17 All things created and held together in Christ.
